"The novel that scandalised Scandanavia, Hjalmar Söderberg’s 1905 psychological thriller is brought vividly to life in this stage adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher. Although “vividly” may seem an odd word to use when the stage is set with only two simple chairs, Dr Glas is brought to life in all his complexities with remarkable clarity by veteran British actor Daniel Gerroll."
-The Scotsman
"Award-winning British television and screen actor Daniel Gerroll (“The Blacklist” and “Chariots of Fire”) gives a captivating performance that delivers on all counts in his portrayal of an unfulfilled and alienated man whose initial joy in finding passion becomes obsession and ultimately menace. Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has crafted a taut 75-minute play as intricate and riveting as classic film noir.”
- Lynne Friedmann, Culture Vulture
"Daniel Gerroll, the reason I sought out this play, is marvelous. His Dr. Glas is so firmly entrenched, so fully realized, it’s as if we tune into history in progress. The actor’s bearing, accent, and movement speak of erudition and class."
-Alix Cohen, Woman Around Town
"Do not let this tremendous performance of the World Premiere of this play pass you by as Daniel Gerroll brings a passionate and emotional performance to the NC Rep stage."
-TR Robertson, The Vista News
"Desire and obsession can go hand in hand. Sometimes, a person becomes so infatuated with another, that they are willing to do anything to be worthy of love. That concept is dramatized intensely, in North Coast Repertory Theatre’s fantastic video production of the world premiere solo show, Dr. Glas.
Adapted from Hjalmar Söderberg’s epistolary novel, an early 20th century Swedish medic, Dr. Glas (Daniel Gerroll) in Stockholm Sweden, falls for a married woman, Helga. The wife confesses that she does not love her husband, the Pastor, Gregorius, and that he consistently treats her in a horrible manner. Glas becomes incredibly smitten, and is determined to find a way to end Helga’s relationship with the man of God.
Jeffrey Hatcher’s writing, based on David Barret’s translation of Soderberg’s book, finds a balance of portraying Glas as both disturbing and empathetic. Glas’ consuming personality is unnerving, but he is also a depressed and lonely man with hidden regrets. Hatchher’s prose is captivating, and it is enthralling to see Glas’ arc throughout."
